A Stroll Around the Neighborhood

Hi friends, welcome back! One of my goals this year was to go outside more and I’ve got into a good habit of it. I know that probably seems silly, but some days it takes a lot of will power to walk out the door and take the elevator downstairs. The NYC air isn’t always fresh, the weather can be less than ideal, but I always feel better after my little walk. All that to say I thought I’d take you along with me on my typical route. I took these pictures on a cold, windy day so there weren’t many others braving the conditions. I dream of strolling through Central Park every day, but in the meantime, there’s still a lot to see in Lower Manhattan. After leaving my apartment I head west through the plaza I used to see out my window. They have a “Domino Effect” display going on right now and when you knock them over, they play a song.

Trinity Church is a few blocks south and more importantly the Whole Foods across the street where we get our groceries.

Through Zucotti Park where they just took down the Christmas lights on Monday.

Through the beautiful 9/11 Memorial Site.

When it’s really cold Jon and I use the above ground passageway to get to Brookfield Mall or my library.

Pumphouse Park will hopefully soon be covered in colorful tulips.

Closer to summer they put tables along the waterfront of Brookfield Mall and we love to grab coffee and sit out here watching the ferries and yachts go by.

I spy some signs of spring! This weekend was in the mid 60s and everyone was taking advantage of the beautiful day!

I love walking along the Hudson River Greenway during the week, it’s so peaceful.

I believe this machine makes wind farms off the coast, perhaps they were testing it on this day.

Lady Liberty and Ellis Island in the distance. Across the river is Jersey City.

Unfortunately for us Battery Park is under major renovations to make it more resilient for future hurricanes. Work is expected to continue until mid-2025. The park is heavily boarded up now and there’s only two exits, I learned that the hard way on one of my walks.

After Battery Park I pass by the Staten Island ferry terminal and the Governors Island ferry. This is my least favorite part because there are so many scalpers for the Statue of Liberty boats, but we don’t look like tourists so they don’t bother us.

Heading up the East River with views of the Brooklyn Bridge.

The downtown Heliport is usually always hopping. If you watched Succession this is where they would fly in and out of to their private jet, living the dream!

Pier 17 is our favorite, we like to sit on these benches and watch the river happenings, especially the big barges we can see from our window.

Then through the Seaport District and back home!

Hope you enjoyed coming along on this walk with me! Every time I leave my door it’s an adventure, there’s always something new to see or something going on.

    1. Glad you enjoyed! I think it’s around 9,000 steps or probably half a cronut of calories 🙂

  1. This brings back nice memories of my four years in New York (a long time ago), though I lived further uptown, in Morningside Hights.

    1. Glad this could bring back some great memories! I don’t spend too much time uptown unless I’m going to Central Park.

  2. That is a great walk Lyssy. So many memories from our two visits and many new ones too. Would be nice to come for another visit one day. Battery Park looks like it was the one that got battered. Have a great Wednesday Lyssy. Allan

    1. Glad I could return the favor of enjoying your walks! I think NYC is always a great idea (except in January or February). I wasn’t here at the time, but I know Hurricane Sandy caused immense damage to Battery Park. Hopefully they get the work done before the next hurricane.

  3. “A Stroll Around the Neighborhood” would be an interesting blogging prompt, and then put several responses side by side. My own wouldn’t have a single structure other than neighboring houses. The photo down to Trinity Church makes me think it must be difficult to pull off building renovations in the middle of NYC, what with busy streets, pedestrians, etc. The list of permits must be a mile long. The photo through Zucotti Park has an appealing optical illusion with the buildings beyond. And the first of the photos of the Hudson River Greenway may be my favorite of them all – so much character with the shadows, benches, lights, water, and sun. Makes it look like the perfect day for your walk.

    1. It was hard for me to come up with a title, but sounds like I nailed it 🙂 I bet you walk is a lot quieter too. Our building has a crack (I think) on the eastern facade (our kitchen and bedroom) and there were three heavy rains in Dec & Jan that caused leaking all the way from the 62nd floor to below us. They said they are working on getting a permit before they can do the work to fix it, so it seems like it takes a while! The Hudson River Greenway is very photogenic, it is only a bad walk if it’s super windy and cold.

    1. Glad you enjoyed! Walking along the river can be very chilly when the buildings can’t block the chill.

  4. Oh, thank you so much for sharing this! We are heading to NYC in June for our son’s graduation trip. We plan on spending the good part of a day walking lower Manhattan after visiting the 911 Museum and Memorial. Thanks for the tip about Battery Park, was hoping to visit but may scratch that knowing it is under construction.

    1. Oh yay so glad to hear that!! Unless you are visiting the Statue of Liberty I would probably pass on Battery Park because the view is so obstructed. If you have any questions or want to run anything by me about your itinerary I’m happy to help 🙂

  5. NYC has the reputation for being rough and gritty, but your walk around says otherwise! The city is especially beautiful on sunny, blue-sky days…I haven’t been back to NYC since I was a kid, and your post makes me want to return as soon as possible! Thanks for sharing a slice of your life in NYC, Lyssy. 🙂

    1. I think the more in you go from the waterfronts the grittier NYC gets. Can’t beat a beautifully sunny day, especially in the winter! You’ll definitely have to make a return trip too, all that good food is waiting for you 🙂

  6. Look at all the wonderful buildings and cosy squares you get to see on a walk around the neighbourhood. I love your beautiful photos from New York City, and the more I see them, the more I wish to visit – after all, it is a bustling metropolis on a global scale! Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

    1. Thank you! NYC really does have little pockets of beautiful and peaceful spots. It can be loud, dirty, and crazy but that is balanced out with beautiful water fronts and of course Central Park 🙂

  7. What a great walk around NYC, Lyssy! The towering skyscrapers and the vibrant energy of the city truly make it an iconic place to stroll around. Every corner of NYC tells a story and leaves a lasting impression on all who wander around.

    1. It really is an iconic place to stroll, there are so many different things to see. You’re right, every corner does tell a story 🙂

  8. I loved following you along on your walk! Everything seems so peaceful from your beautiful pictures! I would love to go on walks a bit more but somehow I can’t prioritise it – maybe I should pair it with a nice podcast or something to motivate me to go outside!
