Zurich, Switzerland

Hi friends, welcome back to the finale of my Switzerland series! Jon and I enjoyed every last second of the mountain views with our morning coffee before we packed up and headed to the train station. The logistics for the day included three different trains as we made our way from Wengen to Zurich. The first of which was the train down to Lauterbrunnen. The views from the train never got old! I sure miss starting my day with a beautiful train or gondola ride.

From Lauterbrunnen we boarded a train to Interlaken, and then a final train from Interlaken to Zurich. The train to Zurich was the one leg we needed to prebook tickets for because it was only covered by our half pass. The commute was pretty uneventful and we arrived in the city center right on schedule. From the train station it was a short walk to our hotel for the night. We stayed at Hotel Wellenberg and it was just ok. The bathroom really needed a remodel but the location was great, bed was comfy, it was clean, and had a fan! We just needed a comfy bed for one night so it worked, but I probably wouldn’t stay there again.

The heatwave in Switzerland was still going strong, it was about 93 degrees in Zurich, so I’m pretty impressed Jon and I lasted as long as we did exploring. I especially do not do well in the heat or sun, but we had an enjoyable afternoon roaming the beautiful streets of the city.

I loved the charming and colorful buildings and couldn’t believe how clean the streets were!

Jon and I couldn’t visit Zurich without stopping into a chocolate shop and the delectable truffles from Teuscher caught our eye. We ate them quickly because they were melting, but they were easily some of the best chocolates we’ve had.

We then made our way to Lake Zurich and found an unoccupied bench to enjoy the breeze and shade.

I stuck my toes in the water and it felt relatively warm but so refreshing!

For dinner we stopped into Sternen Grill for a final meal of some currywurst and bratwurst with some bread rolls. It was delicious and the hearty meal I’d been hoping for in Switzerland.

Heading back to our hotel we admired the views on the other side of the Limmat River. The most notable buildings include Fraumünster Church with the green spires and St. Peters with the big clock. I’d love to return to Switzerland so hopefully we can spend more than a half day in Zurich!

The following morning we went for a quick walk around town and then it was time to hop back on the train to the airport. I don’t have any pictures so it must’ve been a pretty uneventful journey home.

I’m a numbers gal and was curious, so I calculated all our transportation costs. By purchasing our passes, we saved approximately 700 CHF. I think that was worth the headache!

Our trip was everything I hoped it would be, my only complaint is the time went by way too fast!! We finally felt completely relaxed and into a routine and then it was time to head home. To summarize we spent two days in Lucerne, five in Wengen, and one in Zurich before our flight out. We loved Switzerland and hope to see more of this beautiful country one day! I hope you enjoyed this series, thanks for following along 😊

  1. What a splendid run of weather you had, Lyssy. Zurich looks like the perfect place to spend a day, but not at 93 F. I also hate the heat and humidity. Your passes were certainly well used and cost effective. Well done. Have a great Monday. Allan

    1. We really got lucky with such great weather! I wish I would’ve packed my bathing suit to swim in Zurich, would’ve been as clean as taking a bath. I’m glad I researched the passes so wed didn’t have to find out how much it all cost when we got the credit card bill after the trip.

  2. For a big city Zurch has a lot of charm and its setting is the perfect compliment to those lovely buildings. You did well in your stop in Zurich. Maggie

    1. It really is a charming city and also makes a great spot for day trips or to spend before/after a flight. Next time I’ll add an extra day there.

  3. Wow! What an intense week in Switzerland! A great finish to your time in this beautiful, Alps-covered country…similarly, I only stayed one night in Zurich, but it was in January and chilly! I can’t imagine the heat wave you experienced in warmer months! I really enjoyed following your Switzerland series, and I can’t wait to read more adventures from you!

    1. I always do Jam Pack my itineraries, but I just want to see it all! Oh wow your time in Zurich was the complete opposite weather wise. I would love to go back in the winter and see all the snow some day! So glad you enjoyed this series, thanks for following along!

  4. Your photos are so beautiful and colourful and so is Zurich, Lyssy. With its cobbled alleyways and historic churches, the beautiful city of Zurich seems straight from a fairytale and what I loved the most about it – you can easily amble through the historic old town of Zurich, take a boat ride on the Zurich Lake or visit the mountains of Zurich for some fresh Alpine air all in one day. Thanks for sharing, and have agood day 🙂 Aiva xx

    1. thank you! I couldn’t get enough of the colors, charm, and cleanliness! You’re absolutely right, Zurich has so much to offer and is so conveniently accessible to other areas of the country. Have a great day!

    1. Zurich is such a charming city, hopefully one day I’ll get to explore it more. The chocolate was a perfect treat and the brat was a great final meal.

  5. I recall that it was a sizzling hot summer when we spent the week in Grindelwald. Lovely photos too. We also took the train back to Zurich but unlike you didn’t have an opportunity to explore the beautiful city.

    1. I always thought it was cooler in the mountains, but that wasn’t the case for us apparently! I think it’s easiest to fly into Zurich from NYC so I will spend more time there next time 🙂 and I’ll bring my bathing suit in case it’s hot!

  6. Your second photo is magnificent. I can’t imagine another country where you could find those natural and man-made elements all in one place (Austria?) Your confidence in the rail travel speaks to Europe’s mastery of trains, something the U.S. is nowhere close to. I like how the one (unnamed) cathedral is off the grid of the buildings around it, making it stand out more. And I marvel at the comments about clean streets. What is Switzerland’s secret? All ofthose cobbles are just screaming for trash, as are those walls for graffiti. The U.S. could learn so much from the Swiss way of life.

    1. That picture was through the train window too! I think Bavaria and Austria have similar beauty, but I think Switzerland is a beautiful as it gets. I wish the US had as efficient of transportation, would make my life a lot easier! When we were on our morning walk we did see a lot of street sweepers out. I’m sure they also don’t just throw their big trash bags in the streets on garbage day like NYC… although I think they are finally making rules the bags have to be in a trash can.

  7. I love seeing all these photos! I am forever in love with Switzerland. Interlaken is the most delightful place in the summer! I love Zurich and Lucerne as well, but recently visited Basel and was completely taken by it. What a wonderful trip you had! Visiting from Talking About It Tuesdays.

    1. I fell in love with Switzerland too! The natural beauty is just amazing. I’ll have to visit Basel one day! There’s so many beautiful areas to see.

    1. I think it wasn’t humid or we would’ve been in the river swimming in our clothes ha! We did take advantage of the shady streets for sure.

  8. We stayed at Wellenberg too – that’s where my husband nearly died from an asthma attack and we had to get the Doctor out!! The breakfast was really disgusting ha! But agree the location is great and looks like you had a lovely stroll around Zurich despite the heat!

    1. Oh my gosh I remember that!! I feel like I got bamboozled by their website, such a small world that you stayed there too! We will probably always fly into Zurich, so hopefully we can spend more time in the city one day.

  9. What a lovely city to stroll around judging by your wonderful images, no wonder you braved the heat to enjoy it. And of course chocolates and some shade on the beach are always welcome events on any walk and in any city. But chocolate in Zurich is perhaps more than just a chocolate.
