Hi friends, welcome back! The weather in NYC is absolutely perfect right now and Jon and I took full advantage this past weekend and made our annual trip to Governor’s Island. We tore ourselves away from watching the Ryder Cup and boarded the ferry at 10 South Street. This was our fourth time going to the island, so we just planned to have a picnic and stroll around. If you want to check out my prior, more detailed posts on the island you can here, here, and here.
Jon and I headed left after disembarking the ferry and headed in search of some wood-fire pizza from Pizza Yard. We ordered the Piccante – tomato, mozzarella, spicy salami. Oh how we wish we had a pizza oven!
We set up our picnic blanket in the shade and enjoyed the pizza with a beautiful view of Lower Manhattan.
This pizza tasted delicious and was the perfect size to share for a lighter meal. You could definitely make this a personal pizza as well if you’re really hungry. Pizza Yard also has a location at the Brooklyn Navy Yard if you don’t make it out to Governor’s Island.
After finishing our pizza, we walked around enjoying the beautiful fall day. In my opinion, Governor’s Island has the best view of the Statue of Liberty!
Every time Jon and I go to Governors Island, we always make a stop at Melt Bakery for ice cream cookie sandwiches. I picked the Red Velvet and Jon changed it up and ordered the Cinnamax – cinnamon sugar cookies with cinnamon ice cream.
All of the green is so refreshing!
We ended the day by hanging in Hammock Grove.
We had the best afternoon on Governor’s Island! I love our tradition of going to Governor’s Island, it’s always such a relaxing and enjoyable afternoon. Do you have a special spot?
Lovely photos and I too would love a pizza oven.
The regular over just doesn’t compare when it comes to pizza
I so agree
Love the photo of the hedges with the sun in the background. Looks like something from the cover of a book. Are the hedges a maze or does it just look that way?
Thank you! I think it is made to just look that way. There is a different maze on the island, but that area is closed
Have never been to Governor’s Island. Well Lyssy, you’ve sold it to me… if I ever make it back to NYC. Great shots as usual, especially those skies.
Thank you! It’s a great spot tbat not many people know about 😃
Exactly two years ago I was in New York for the best stay I ever had, it’s still summer but without its extremes, nothing but the best. Your casual photos remind me so much of those happy moments.
Sounds like an incredible trip, so happy I could remind you of those happy times 😃
How is possible that this beautiful place with amazing views so close to NYC isn’t overrun with people on such a gorgeous day? Thanks for tipping me off to this lovely spot. 😃
Great question – they must’ve been at Central Park but I think governors island is a hidden gem! We always feel so restored after going
Excellent photos of Governors Island . You both are looking awesome 👍. You have written beautifully about your trip. Loved to read it ❤️❤️☺️ thank you.
Thank you so much!!
I was going to go to governor’s island when I was in NYC in August, but tropical storm Henri ruined my plans. I definitely need to get there next year!
They just announced it’ll be open year round, so you’ll definitely have to go 😊 I forgot that Henri interrupted your trip!
Oh wow that’s great that it will be open year round, it would be interesting to visit in the winter.
What a perfect day – I’d never have got my husband away from the Ryder Cup though; he was transfixed (and very unhappy lol)
Haha too funny! The next US Ryder Cup is in NY so we are hoping to go 🙂
Ahh amazing, we’re planning on going to Italy next year for it as well 🙂
That sounds incredible, take me with you! 😂
