Switzerland – Mount Titlis

Hi friends, welcome back to my Switzerland series! On our first full day in Switzerland, I looked out the window and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky! Jon and I planned a day trip to the top of Mount Titlis so this was a welcome sight to see. We grabbed some coffee from the hotel breakfast and boarded the 8:10 train for a forty-five minute ride from Lucerne to Engelberg. The train was extremely crowded so I highly recommend getting to the station a little early so you can find adjacent seats. This train runs back and forth to Engleberg every hour and we used our half fare pass to get 50% off the tickets. The mountain and countryside views along the way were gorgeous and added to the excitement of our excursion.

We bought our tickets for the Titlis Xpress cable car at a kiosk (half off with our pass 96CHF -> 48CFH each) and ascended to the top of the mountain taking in the picturesque views. There’s a midway station you can stop at called Trubsee (next post), but we stayed on until the final stop at Stand station. From there we got on the Titlis Rotair, the first ever revolving cable car. It was like the hunger games trying to get a good spot against the windows, but you can see a good view even from the center of the cable car. Also, make sure you keep your ticket safe because you need to scan it multiple times on the journey up and down.

After exiting the cable car, we made a beeline for the top of the mountain at about 3,000m. There was still snow outside on the top so I’d recommend wearing hiking boots and layers, even in late August. It was a little slippery so it made for some good people watching with the occasional snowball fight.

The views from the top were incredible and we couldn’t have asked for a more picture perfect day! I couldn’t stop taking pictures so it was difficult to narrow down pictures for this post, a great problem to have 🙂

This mountain top also has Europe’s tallest suspension bridge, Titlis Cliff Walk, at 3,041m above sea level. It opened in 2013 and measures 100m long and suspends 500m above the rocky mountain below. It swayed back and forth a bit, but felt secure. The bridge is only one meter wide which did cause some bottlenecks with people taking pictures, including us. We enjoyed the views while waiting for the bridge to clear and then made our move.

Mount Titlis offers more adventure with an ice cave accessible from inside the summit station. The cave sits at 20m below the surface of the glacier and spans 150m long. It was freezing inside so we walked through very quickly but it was still pretty cool (pun slightly intended).

If you need a break from adventure, head back inside the summit station for a chocolate shop, restaurant, café, and plenty of comfy places to sit and enjoy the views. We indulged in some Lindt truffles while taking in all the stunning scenery. Once we had our fill of Mount Titlis, we headed back down to the middle station to walk to Trübsee. Stay tuned for our stunning stroll around Trübsee.

  1. An awesome day to be on the top of a mountain Lyssy. So glad you managed to see the views. We were not in Switzerland long enough to hit the heights, so thanks for sharing your adventure. Have a wonderful Monday. Allan

    1. Couldn’t have asked for a better day! It’s nice being able to see the views without any hard work.

  2. Oh my goodness, I can’t even pick a favorite here because it all looks and sounds amazing! The views are stunning and that suspension bridge looks really fun.

    1. It was so beautiful! I couldn’t stop taking pictures and it had a lot of fun activities we enjoyed.

  3. Wow, just look at that gorgeous blue sky and the never-ending sight of snow-capped mountains. While I love Switzerland’s peaceful lakes and fairytale-like villages, it’s the jaw-dropping backdrop of mountains that make Switzerland an even more stunning place to visit. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

    1. The snow-capped mountains really were never ending, it was mesmerizing! I agree, Switzerland is so charming, but the mountain views are just breath taking. 🙂

  4. Mount Titlis looks stunning! How remarkable that there’s snow, even in August! I assume it was a bit chilly up there, too? Looks like it’s a fun time without too much of a strenuous hike up!

    1. I would say it was maybe high 50s or low 60s up there which is relatively warm for a mountain top, but it wasn’t windy so that helped. It was great to see all the views without a tough ascent.

    1. The snow was pretty slippery! I can’t remember if they had an observation deck on top of the cable car station so you could avoid the snow.

    1. Thank you! I’d love to visit in the winter one year, but I’d have to practice my skiing, I think it’s been 20 years…We passed on going up Jungfrau because the view is mostly snow so it didn’t seem worth it compared to Titlis.

  5. Absolutely beautiful Lyssy and gorgeous weather too. Those snow capped peaks look amazing. My parents visited Mount Tiitlis whilst staying in Engleberg and rode up to the peak but it’s obviously been more developed since then with the swing bridge etc. I’d love to go there one day!

    1. It was the perfect day and the views were unbeatable! Hopefully you can go up there one day and retrace your parents footsteps 🙂

    1. We couldn’t have asked for a better day or views! The ice cave was so cold even in the heat wave!

  6. If I went back through our 2019 Lucerne itinerary I’d find the name of the Alpine mountain we topped, the one pretty much right there on the opposite side of Lake Lucerne from our hotel. We took a mountain tram part of the way up, then switched to a suspended gondola for the remainder. The views were just as you show here, only looking miles down down on Lucerne and the lake itself. The viewing platform was cantilevered beyond the mountain itself, to where you were standing above nothing at all. Plenty adventurous for someone like me. There’s no way I could’ve made it across that suspension bridge!

    1. I think that is probably Mount Pilatus, that is probably the most popular day trip. I think you’re definitely going to be glad you’re on the ground when I post about my paragliding 🙂

  7. Such incredibly perfect weather for your day trip! It’s magical when the stars align in this way while travelling. The views are just stunning and humbling- I went up Mount Pilatus when I was visiting Lucerne and the views disappeared part way up as there was dense cloud cover near the top. It was still a lot of fun but I love being able to see the full scope of the area’s mountain peaks in these photos! 😍🗻

  8. The blueness of that sky and the views of mountains are magnificent. A perfect escape also from the summer heat. The ice cave and the suspension bridge nicely complete the visit to Mount Titlis.

    1. We really did have the perfect day! It’s hard planning trips around the weather and cloud conditions.
