NYBG Flowers in Fashion Orchid Show 2024

Hi friends, welcome back! Spring came early at the New York Botanical Garden. The Enid A. Haupt Conservatory was transformed into a colorful oasis for the twenty first annual Orchid Show and I was excited to attend. The theme this year is Florals in Fashion and it’s on display until April 21st Tuesday through Sunday from 10am-6pm. If you want a more festive experience, the NYBG offers Orchid Nights on the weekends from March 30th through April 20th for people over twenty-one to enjoy the flowers with a cocktail.

Jon and I went on a chilly Sunday morning and felt like we were transported to a tropical oasis upon entering the conservatory. The humidity and warmth were a welcome treat although it took a bit for my camera lens to stop fogging up. The show starts with a preview of the Florals in Fashion theme.

Then we moved through the conservatory enjoying the variety of orchids in the NYBG’s collection. In the world there are an estimated 25,000-30,000 different types of orchids making them the largest family of plants.

I enjoyed getting some close up shots of the orchids as we made our way through the different climates.

They saved the best for last with these magnificent displays by the fashion designers! It’s pretty incredible how creative people are. Per the NYBG’s press release, “The sartorial scene is set by thousands of diverse orchids and accessorizing plants in dramatic, picture-perfect installations, highlighting the bold, fashion-themed creations of three rising design stars—Collina Strada by Hillary Taymour, Dauphinette by Olivia Cheng, and FLWR PSTL a.k.a. Kristen Alpaugh—who have all been inspired by nature”

“In The Orchid Show: Florals in Fashion, three visionaries each present their unique perspective on the connections between the botanical world and fashion. Hillary Taymour is founder and creative director of Collina Strada, a fashion platform dedicated to promoting climate and social awareness and fostering self-expression. Olivia Cheng is designer and founder of fashion label Dauphinette, which is best known for its use of preserved botanicals and repurposed materials to create upcycled fashions. FLWR PSTL is Kristen Alpaugh, botanical artist, and founder and creative director at Haus of Stems, the world’s first on-demand botanical art atelier, known for her experimental botanical artwork and custom wearables.”

After the show Jon and I soaked in the sun and fresh air outside the conservatory. Daffodils and bluebells were just starting to bloom meaning spring is on the way! We attempted to walk around the garden, but the cold and wind had us making a beeline back to the car.

Jon and I had such a great time seeing the Orchid Show and look forward to returning to the garden. Hopefully when the cherry blossoms and magnolias are blooming! If you live near NYC I’d highly recommend getting a NYBG membership. Our dual membership was $115 and includes two free parking passes, half price parking year round (parking is $22), member days, and unlimited entry to the garden and special exhibits. Without our membership this outing would’ve cost $92, so after our next visit the membership will already provide a decent savings. What do you think of the Flowers in Fashion Orchid Show?

  1. Orchids have such variety in shape, size and colour and apparently a lot of resilience. Our orchid show took place here recently on a very cold snowy weekend. Entries came from all over the world and I just had to wonder if that was part of the test to see how good the growers were. A colourful spring display Lyssy. Happy Monday. Allan

    1. They have a lot of resilience until they would live in my house ha! It’s amazing all the different types of orchids, I had no idea there were so many. They bring some nice color to a gloomy winter. Hope your spring weather comes soon!

  2. Of course NY would have fashion in their flower show 😊 But the mannequins and flower are so colourful and beautiful. What a great idea to combine them. Maggie

  3. Wow, who knew there were so many kinds of orchids? I could never pick a favorite, but I could definitely see myself getting lost here for a couple hours!

    1. I did not until I looked it up! The warmth of the greenhouse and all the spring colors made for a perfect visit!

    1. I love orchids too, I never knew there were so many different types to love. It was such a fun theme this year!

  4. How gorgeous! What a way to usher in the blooming spring season. Despite the still-cold temperatures outside, inside must’ve been a warm, almost tropical paradise. Thanks for sharing your time there, Lyssy!

    1. Such a fun way to usher in spring. It really was a tropical paradise, such a treat on a cold day!

  5. Admittedly a flower show is not my thing (nor a car show, come to think of it) so I appreciate you doing the paying, walking, and photography for me 🙂 Also, it’s a little surreal to see you and Jon in parkas. We’re already in tees and shorts down here as the heat and humidity start to make there way back into season yet again. The azaleas are in full bloom, so bring on The Masters!

    1. I really thought winter was behind us, but it’s been pretty chilly! I sure am excited for The Masters! I even emailed them to get whoever is claiming my apartment as their address removed so I can apply for tickets next year haha. Such a beautiful golf course. I think I’d prefer a practice round so I could take pictures. I’ll be rooting for McIlroy, Scheffler, and Hovland this year.

      1. We live only 45 min. from Augusta National now, so I have no excuse not to at least try to go one of these years. Agree with you – the practice rounds are the way to go (and much less expensive!) I’d rather watch the tournament on TV anyway, for the coverage, commentary, and comfort of my couch. I like your choices for the green jacket. I’d add Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott, even though their chances aren’t as good. Any of these five is a great ambassador for the game.

      2. My dad went to two practice rounds and he said it’s even prettier in person. He mostly loved to low prices of the concessions ha! Hope you get some tickets one year, you’d save a lot of money on lodging being so close. I agree I’d rather watch on TV for the commentary and seeing more of the action. Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott are good guys too. One more week! Although the par 3 is cute to watch with all the kids.

  6. Ooo how beautiful, I love orchids and really want to visit the similar show at Kew here in England (plus visit Singapore’s orchid garden, it’s long been on my list!). Your photos are gorgeous.

    1. Thank you! I was tempted to bring one home from the gift shop, but my lack of a green thumb stopped me haha. Visiting Kew and Singapore’s orchid garden would be amazing!

  7. Gorgeous flowers, and I love your up close photos of them! This looks like a very neat event, and I love how they incorporated the fashion and flowers!!!

  8. I’ve been looking forward to your post about the orchid show and it did not disappoint. Orchids are such delicate and beautiful flowers. It’s amazing how they come in so many different colours.

  9. Beautiful! Orchids are my favourite flowers, they are so diverse. Some years ago I enjoyed a stroll around the orchid garden in Singapore. I cannot remember if you’ve been to Singapore or not, but I think you’d love the city given all its magnificent gardens and greenery. Great photography!
