Decorating My Parent’s House for Christmas 2021

Hi friends, come on in for a holiday home tour at my parent’s house in Michigan! I love decorating their house for Christmas and this year I restored things to their usual spots after I couldn’t decorate last year. I have a system that I take very seriously and plenty of pictures to guide me ha. I dream of one day having high ceilings for a massive Christmas tree, a stairway to line with garland, a big basement to store it all, and a white Christmas of course 🙂 (All pictures were taken on Thanksgiving and this post is best viewed listening to some Christmas tunes)

I always start by decorating the mantel with my mom’s Santa collection, now you can see where I get it from 😉

More Santas on this desk and some cute old pictures of me and my sisters at Christmastime. This mall Santa almost looks too real!

I always save the tree for last, this one was hard to decorate because the branches are so large and pokey. I dropped three ornaments but luckily none broke. I was a major butterfingers this year!

I also almost killed Jon this year… I was decorating the balcony and I was holding a big peppermint ornament and it fell out of the hook and landed right next to Jon on the couch. I was watching it in slow motion as it fell and thought it was going to shatter, but we lucked out and the couch absorbed the fall!! We could’ve had a major disaster if it landed on the table or Jon’s head. Next year I’ll put up some caution tape while I decorate 😉

This picture below is from 2019, and the peppermint on the right is what fell. Definitely wouldn’t have tickled haha.

The breakfast nook and kitchen area.

Above the kitchen sink displays the cute snowman collection.

The foyer garland is one of my favorite areas at Christmastime. The new garland really did a number on my fingers this year. I had some battle scars, but it was worth it! This looks so pretty at night and adds so much coziness.

Last but not least, we have the fancy tree in the living room that my dad decorated.

Thanks for stopping by, I hope you enjoyed the tour!! Have you decked your halls?

    1. Thank you! Haha killed by Christmas would be so sad. I was trying to think of a peppermint pun but I’m stumped 😂🎅🏻

  1. I think you have a career ahead of you in this Lyssy. Great job. We are likely doing our decorating this weekend. Much easier for me as I left the tree assembled down my basement. I hate fluffing up the branches after it has been stored in a box for a year. Looking forward to it, as we play Christmas carols. As for Jon….I can see the repoprt now….Cause of death….falling candy. Was this just your subtle hint that he shouyld be lending a hand? Thanks for sharing. Allan

    1. Thank you, would be a great job!! That is nice, the fluffing of the branches is my least favorite part of decorating. Haha Jon did carry up some of the boxes but he says he doesn’t want to disrupt my creative process 🙂

  2. Jon’s expression in the one photo is priceless. The “peppermint plunge” must’ve just happened and his heart rate is still returning to normal. Also, couldn’t help noticing you and your sisters dressed in American flags in the photo on the kitchen sill. Fourth of July parade, perhaps?

    1. Haha the peppermint plunge is great! That was our Christmas card in 2001 after 9/11. I remember not wanting to smile because my lips were chapped haha

    1. Thank you! It’s funny I am only good at decorating for the holidays, out apartment seems so empty in the off-season. But I would love to be a Christmas decorator, maybe for some cool NYC celebs 🙂

    1. Thank you! Nothing beats a white Christmas, you may have more of a chance than me, we are spending Christmas in Atlanta this year.

  3. Beautiful and oh so festive! This year feels a bit different for me – I’m an only child, my Mum and Dad are with my Grandpa because he isn’t very well and my Granny passed away this year. So it’s just me and my husband this year which will be nice, but also weird to think that will be the norm now with no children of our own. Feels weird so your post has just upped my festive cheer a bit 🙂

    1. Aww sorry to hear about your Granny. A quiet Christmas will be nice and I’ll be thinking of you and your husband this Christmas, maybe you can start a new tradition this Christmas that you’ll always look forward to. I think you should take an annual NYC trip and I can take you on a tour of all the decor 🙂

      1. Aw thanks Lyssy – and you’re right, just the two of us will be really nice and cosy and give us a bit of quality time. I totally agree an annual NYC trip sounds like the perfect new tradition though!
