Shine Bright at Hudson Yards 2023

Hi friends, welcome back! One of my favorite holiday decorations in the city is the Shine Bright at Hudson Yards display presented by Wells Fargo. The mall officially opened in 2019, but 2020 was the first year with these extravagant decorations. I first saw this display in 2021 and I couldn’t believe how any lights there were! They seem to keep it the same every year, but I can appreciate that. The decorations are on display from now until January 7, 2024.

In total, there are over two million string lights spanning 115 miles. They must have a hefty electric bill!

725 evergreens are dispersed throughout the exterior and interior space.

I love this giant hot air balloon. I don’t really associate hot air balloons with Christmas, but it’s so pretty when the lights change colors.

I’d love to see Santa’s elves busy working on this display, it must take a lot of hands and hours!

This year they had a few photo props to take pictures with.

While at the mall you can complete you holiday shopping, dine at the many restaurants, take pictures with Santa, skate at New York’s tallest skating rink at the Edge, or grab a drink at Santa’s Secret speakeasy. Shine Bright by Hudson Yards is always a beautiful sight to see and I usually visit during the week to avoid the crowds. You can go inside when the mall is open Monday-Saturday 10am -8pm, Sunday 11am -7pm. After visiting Hudson Yards, I’d recommend walking a few avenues over to Macy’s on 34th Street which is coming up next 🙂 Stay tuned for more holiday cheer!

    1. It is nice now when one bulb goes out the whole strand is still ok. We all need some brightness in our lives. I would be afraid to hang that big balloon, it is probably very heavy!

  1. Absolutely brilliant! So many lights everywhere; I’m sure the electricity bill is through the roof when the holiday season is over. Really cool there’s a Santa-themed speakeasy, and I’d love to check out Hudson Yards on my next trip to NYC! Thanks for sharing, Lyssy, and happy holidays!

    1. It’s amazing how many lights they have! I’m glad I can enjoy the lights without paying for them. It seems every year there are more and more holiday themed bars and popups, they’re all so fun! Hudson Yards has really come a long way in the last five years. Happy holidays!

    1. It really does, especially now that it gets dark around 4:30. I do love the design they came up with.

  2. Like Macy’s, I’m sure the decorations bring in the dollars (so to speak). You show up to see the lights and you leave with unexpected purchases. Smart retail strategy. The extravagance of the Hudson Yards display makes me realize we’ve upped our expectations when it comes to Christmas decorations. Now it seems we need thousands (if not millions) of lights, shaped into characters or things, changing colors, movement, etc. to be impressed. Wonder what the next big thing will be with Christmas decor – holograms? You just know someone’s coming up with something new and different as we speak.

    1. Very true and they get a lot of traffic from people going up to the observation deck. It really is an extravagant display, they left no square foot undecorated. It seems like drones are the next thing, although it will take time to get it all synchronized nicely.

    1. I bet they charge a lot of rent to the tenants or maybe Mastercard writes it off as a charitable donation. NY at Christmas is truly amazing!
