Poke is a new concept to me I must admit. The easiest way to describe it is that it’s sushi in a bowl. I have only been eating sushi for about two years, so I was a little hesitant to try poké. I’m still a bit of a picky eater, but I’m so glad I tried it. The first time I had poké I was a little afraid to try it because it’s raw fish, but after the first bite I became obsessed!
I first tried it in NYC with Jon back when I moved in May, and we’ve tried a few places so far that have been really good! We are still trying new places, so this list could change over time, but I’m sharing my top three favorite places today. They are listed in the order that I’ve tried them in because it’s so hard to compare them, they’re all so good!!
1. Poké Fun
The first place I ever tried was Poké Fun. This was two blocks away from our old apartment, so we got it about 1-2x a month. I always order the bowl called Rainbow Love, which is like the Rainbow shushi roll. It has: Ahi tuna, salmon, sweet onion, edamame, cucumber, mango, edamame, seaweed salad, crabmeat salad, roasted seaweed, wonton crisps and yuzu ponzu sauce.
Jon usually ordered the Ahi Tuna Classic which has: Ahi Tuna, sweet onion, mango, cucumber, edamame, jalapeno, crabmeat salad, seaweed salad, roasted seaweed, wonton crisps, spicy aioli and sesame oil.
2. Wisefish Poké
The second place we loved was Wisefish Poké. We ordered this online but really want to try it in the restaurant because the pictures look really cool. I really liked this bowl because I could get half rice, half zoodles as my base instead of all rice. I built my own bowl with salmon, tuna, crab salad, cucumber, edamame, sweet onion, nori, and seaweed salad. I got a spicy sauce by accident, but it was still delicious! (I don’t handle spicy well)
3. Pokébab
The third place we loved was Pokébab. This one is a few blocks from our apartment, but it’s not open on the weekends by us sadly. I created my own bowl when I went here similar to the Rainbow Love above. I got a ponzu sauce instead that was sweeter and a great choice for me. We will probably start going here the most for poké because it’s so close now.
I’m not a huge poke eater but it’s good and interesting. Living in a relatively smaller town because we don’t have as much options as you do in NYC!
