Foodie Friday: February 2024

Hi friends, welcome back to another edition of my monthly series showcasing all my delicious eats during the month. As you know, one of my favorite parts of living in NYC is the abundance of incredible food, and I’ve been on a mission to try all the best places and share my finds along the way. Disclaimer: these posts will cause hunger 🙂 If you want to stay up to date on all my foodie finds, you can follow my food Instagram here.

As usual, I went to Dominique Ansel to grab February’s Cronut flavor of Rhubarb Jam & Rose Ganache. This one is one of the prettiest cronuts they’ve had lately, but I thought the Rhubarb flavor was a little overwhelming. Usually my critique has been that they’re lacking flavor, but not this month.

My ordering so far of most to least favorite: Salted Caramel Pretzel, Cherry Jam & Cappuccino Ganache, Cappuccino & Maple, Peach & Cornbread Ganache, Stracciatella & Salted Milk, Lychee Ganache & Mascarpone Ganache, Pumpkin Pie & Brown Sugar Ganache, Blueberry & Sweet Corn, Ube Ganache & Thai Coconut Ganache, Strawberry & Olive Oil, Lemon Curd & Graham Cracker Ganache , Blackberry Jam & Coconut Ganache, Early Grey & Okinawa black Sugar, Mango Jam & Milk Chocolate Ganache, Strawberry Poppyseed & Buttermilk, Raspberry & Pistachio, Rhubarb Jam & Rose, Honey Peach Jam & Graham Cracker Ganache, Almond and Fig, Butterscotch & Rice Pudding, Malt & Caramel, Apple & Rhubarb,  Matcha & Coconut, Passionfruit & Vanilla, Peanut Butter & Banana, Caramel Flan & Orange Marmalade, Pineapple & Oolong, Green Apple Butterscotch, and Black Truffle & Caramel Popcorn Cronut.

Places I was invited to:

We had another brunch at Little Rebel and tried some of the other delicious menu items. Our favorite was the Hangover Bagel but you can’t go wrong Brunch Burger on brioche or some classic Avocado Toast on toasted sourdough.

Handcraft Burgers & Brews has my favorite smash burgers in the city and this was my third time going back, but Jon’s first experience. We ordered the 6.6 Burger (our fav), Vegas Rodeo, fries, and Buffalo Tots. Every month they have a Burger of the Month and Februarys was the Vegas Rodeo with a single beef patty, sharp American cheese, smashed tater tots, and onions.

My friend invited me to dinner at Albert’s Bar and this Midtown spot was really cool and unexpectedly upscale! We went on a Wednesday and it was full of business professionals unwinding from the workday. For dinner we ordered the Forbidden Rice Arancini, Spätzle Mac N Cheese, Albert’s Double Deluxe Burger, Golden Boy Chicken Sandwich, and Lemon Meringue Pie. We really enjoyed our time here.

Last but not least a sneak peak from a few bites on our Greenwich Village Food Tour – full post to follow 😊

What caught your eye this month?

  1. Too bad about the rhubarb and rose cronut. That would be one I would like to try. We are OK with real rhubarb flavour, as we have several plants here. The burgers and brunch sandwiches look delicious but it would seem heavy napkin usage would be required. Have a great Friday Lyssy. Allan

    1. I bet you would have liked the rhubarb cronut, maybe I was expecting a sweeter taste. The brunch sandwiches were very messy, especially with the runny egg. I don’t like messy fingers, but I was willing to sacrifice for the pics.

      1. When we were kids, we used to dare each other to eat raw rhubarb straight out of the garden. We learned to do this without making a face, but we preferred it with sugar on it. Oh, the runny egg would have done me in. I want all the cluck cooked out of my eggs. 🍳😊

      2. That sounds familiar my neighbors told my sister they’d give her five bucks to eat a grape that was actually a green tomato. Simple times 😂 that’s fair, except for a few occasions I like the egg well cooked!

  2. I am so glad I waited to eat this until I was 1/2 way through my lunch; it all looks so yummy!

  3. Lots of good pizza and bagels in NYC! I think when it comes to rhubarb and anything rhubarb-flavored, it can be hard to taste it, as it’s a pretty-subtle flavor. All the same, a lovely February spent with good food!

    1. Hard to resist pizza or bagels in NYC! Maybe it was the rose flavor that I was tasting, I’ve never had rose before haha.

  4. Hey, Lyssy, this is the second time in two weeks that I appear to be unsubscribed from your blog, very weird. Anyway, here I am hitting the subscribe button again. The burgers and bagels all look absolutely delicious, as one would expect from NYC. I’m not a fan of rhubarb, so I probably wouldn’t be in love with that cronut.

    1. Very strange! I have noticed that WordPress has been a bit glitchy lately. Bagels and burgers always sound great to me, good choice! I think we only ate half of the cronut which is pretty telling.

  5. The cronut wins my attention this month, even if it was a little flavorful for you (and was there any “rose” taste?) It’s an elegant look and combination so I’d almost forgive the flavor. I will admit to pausing at the spatzle mac n cheese. I guess I needed something savory after something sweet ha.

    1. I suppose I don’t even know what rose tastes like, only rose the wine. The cronut was pretty, especially for a valentine month flavor. Can never go wrong with spatzle Mac n cheese, especially in the winter.

      1. I feel like I’ve tasted “floral” but maybe I’m confusing the smell of soap instead. Whatever, Dominque Ansel gets props for coming up with new combinations month after month. Makes your rankings a very challenging task!

      2. It is amazing how they can come up with so many flavors without repeating. It’s hard to remember all the flavors when I rank them, but I try!

  6. Even though I’m not a donut/cronut fan I would try the rhubarb one. Too much rhubarb flavour is never a problem for me. The Mac and cheese would also be a must. 😊Maggie

    1. Maybe the rhubarb flavor would cancel out the sweetness of the cronut for you. Mac and cheese is always a good idea, especially in the winter 🙂

    1. Haha I should also figure out how to have a little free sample or sniff! Maybe in 30 years that will be possible.

    1. Can never go wrong with pizza in NYC! I think we liked Pilgrim Pizza when we were in London
