Parents Weekend in NYC – Part Two

Hi friends, welcome back! The third day of my parents visit was a sunny Saturday with temperatures near 80 degrees. A rare forecast for late October, but perfect for a full day of sight-seeing. We started the day at the lively Washington Square Arch and stumbled upon the organization of a Halloween dog parade. We loved seeing all the cute pups in costume, especially the Golden Retrievers.

We then strolled through the West Village to Little Island. Everyone was taking advantage of the beautiful day!

I couldn’t believe it when I was able to get a reservation at Don Angie (you can read more about reservations here). This is a Michelin Star Italian restaurant and Jon and I loved our meal here back in March, so I was excited for my parents to experience it. We all worked up an appetite with our walking and were ready for a delicious feast. We shared the Stuffed Garlic Bread, Lasagna for Two, Chicken Scarpariello, Japanese Sweet Potatoes, and ended with Tiramisu. We all agreed the Chicken Scarpariello and Japanese Sweet Potatoes were our favorites.

With full bellies we headed back to Chelsea to walk through Chelsea Market and then up the High Line.

We walked through the mall at Hudson Yards and they were already setting up for Christmas. I can’t wait to go back when it’s fully decorated.

We headed home afterwards to watch some college football and snack on my spooky charcuterie board.

On day four my parents spent the morning at the 9/11 museum. Jon and I still haven’t been, but we know we need to go. I met back up with my parents in the afternoon and NYC was back to its usual weekend downpour. The first stop of my afternoon tour was at Grand Central Station.

We took cover under as much scaffolding as we could on our way to the stunning Stephen A. Schwartzman library on Fifth Avenue. We passed through Bryant Park quickly and saw the Christmas Village getting set up. For lunch I took my parents to Handcraft for some smash burgers. I didn’t get any good pictures, but this spot has great quality burgers for a very reasonable price.

Times Square wasn’t so busy in the rain. It won’t be long before the ball will be dropping to ring in 2024!

While we were out exploring, Chef Jon was busy preparing a delicious feast. He made us some homemade guacamole and birria tacos on homemade tortillas. It was a perfect last meal for my parents.

The following morning I awoke before the sun to attend a live taping of Kelly and Mark with my mom. We didn’t have priority tickets so we didn’t have the best seats, but it was still fun to attend another show. The guests were Gizelle Bryant from Real Housewives of Potomac and Paul Russel who sings the hit “Lil Boo Thang”.

We grabbed some much-needed coffee after and strolled through the western part of a moody Central Park. They were already setting up for the marathon the following weekend and we saw quite a few people getting in their last few miles before the race.

On our way back to the subway we made a necessary stop for some Levain Bakery cookies. We got chocolate chip, fall chocolate chunk, coconut caramel, and oatmeal raisin.

We went back to the West Village to see the Friends house and Matthew Perry tribute.

My mom and I made one final stop at Popup Bagels to bring home for my dad who was busy painting our accent wall. Jon and I have had the vision of an accent wall for months, but we couldn’t find the will to paint. Lucky for us my dad enjoys it and was happy to make our vision come true. Thanks dad, it turned out great!

We gave my parents a quick tour of our building and then it was time for them to head back to Michigan. It was so nice to host my parents and show them my city! They were able to see all the major sights and enjoy some of the culinary delights they’ve seen on my blog. Also, if you’re ever in need of a downtown hotel, they’d highly recommend Hotel Indigo on Trinity Street.
