One Last Day in Nantucket

Hi friends, welcome back to the finale of my Nantucket series! Our final full day on the island came way too quickly. I suppose that’s the sign of a great vacation. Jon and I didn’t have any big plans other than our usual coffee, sandwich, shopping, strolling, and dinner at Nautilus. We woke up to a bit of a drizzle, but the day cleared up by the time we got our coffee and had breakfast.

Our favorite thing to do in Nantucket is walk along the beautiful streets. It’s the total opposite experience of going for a walk in NYC. I love admiring the stunning homes, perfectly manicured lawns, and blooming hydrangeas. On this walk we meandered up Cliff Road which has some very nice real estate.

Jon and I had to make a quick stop at Brant Point Lighthouse, this is the lighthouse you see coming in from the ferry.

A few snaps from homes that caught my eye around town. Sadly the décor shop I loved closed so we couldn’t find any good souvenirs besides some hats and a golf shirt from Vineyard Vines.

Jon and I saved best meal of the trip for last and enjoyed our dinner at Nautilus.

I sure miss our pre-ice cream sunset strolls.

One final ice cream from the Juice Bar.

The following morning we grabbed one last coffee, went for a quick walk, packed up, and headed to the pier for our 10am ferry. Don’t let these smiles fool you, we were sad to leave! After disembarking the ferry we walked to our car and started the unexpectedly long drive home. We called Sally’s Apizza and placed our to-go order for 2:45pm. When we arrived we had a bit of a wait because they burned the pizza before us and the takeout window guy was M.I.A. When we finally got our pizza it was not the one we ordered, so they had to remake it which felt like an eternity, but we ended up with two pizzas for the price of one. I actually thought the pizza tasted better once it had cooled and we reheated it. I don’t think I would wait hours in line to eat here, but it was delicious. New Haven pizza is famous for their thin-crust coal fired pizza and you’re supposed to get half tomato sauce and half mozzarella tomato sauce. I preferred the slices with the mozzarella.

We left New Haven by 3:45pm and encountered so much traffic on the way home plus an accident that was about two miles ahead of us. When we finally got to NYC the Brooklyn Bridge was shut down so the FDR was a nightmare from the traffic backups. From New Haven to our parking garage it’s about 80 miles and usually 2 hours, but it took us 3.5 with all the traffic. Spirits were not great. As soon as we got home I looked out the window and the FDR was totally clear, it was just an unlucky day! I think we finally got home around 8pm so it took us about 10.5 hours door to door. We learned our lesson to take the earliest ferry and not come back on a Friday. Despite the rough commute, we had the best time in Nantucket and are already dreaming of going back!
