Celebrating our Third Anniversary

Hi friends, welcome back! Jon and I recently celebrated our three year wedding anniversary, and while we didn’t spend the day on an unforgettable vacation, we did celebrate with a delicious dinner. I made a reservation for the Mexican restaurant Casa Enrique in Long Island City. This restaurant opened in 2012 and has been on my radar for a few years. It was the first Mexican restaurant in NYC to get a coveted Michelin Star that it held from 2015-2021. The menu is pretty affordable for a prior Michelin recognized restaurant and features family recipes from Chef Cosme Aguilar.

Once we were seated the waiter brought out chicharrones de harina, or little puffs of wheat flour. They reminded me of bambas but with little flavor, but they were somehow slightly addicting dipped in the trio of salsas.

For an appetizer we ordered the classic Guacamole with homemade tortilla chips.

Jon and I also shared the Tacos de Pescado (Cerveza Battered Market Fish w/ Avocado Sauce) and they were perfectly crispy and had a great combination of flavors. This was my favorite dish, but two handheld tacos for $19 is a little steep in our opinion.

I ordered the Enchiladas de Pollo con Mole de Piaxtla (Chicken breast rolled in corn tortilla with mole sauce, onion, black beans, crema fresca, queso fresco, and avocado). They tasted great but I would’ve preferred about half the amount of sauce, it was a lot of flavor for me! This is just my preference because I even told Jon enchiladas he made were too flavorful…

Jon chose the Cochinito Chiapaneco (Roasted pork ribs marinated in guajillo chilies, rice and beans) for his entrée and won the clean plate award.

Jon and I were too full for dessert. It’s hard to find a great, authentic Mexican restaurant in NYC, but this seems as close as it gets! Three years down, decades to go 😊

  1. Happy Aniversary!! We’re in Mexico now and I find they put too much sauce on everything, drowning the food. I complained to a waiter once and he said Mexicans love salsa, but I’m with you, it’s too much. Maggie

    1. Thank you! That’s interesting! I’ve never been to Mexico but I am sure the food is so fresh and incredible. When I was a kid I would eat my tacos with just a shell and meat, I’ve come a long way haha.

  2. Well, Happy 3rd Anniversary to you and Jon, Lyssy. Something to be celebrated and Mexican is always a good choice. The food does look good and while taco prices may be steep, I fear this happened after Covid. Now you have me craving Mexican food. Have a great day. Allan

    1. Thank you! We hadn’t had Mexican food out in a while so it was a nice change of scenery. Jon makes some really good tacos, but you’re right, even the price of the meat is pretty high so the price is probably not to crazy once you price out the ingredients.

  3. I’m with you… way too much enchilada sauce there. It all looks pretty tasty, though! Happy anniversary! I can’t believe it’s already been three years since we were reading about your wedding.

    1. I saw pictures of the enchiladas online, but I didn’t realize just how flavorful they’d be ha. Thank you! It is crazy I thought my math was off but it’s really been three years.

  4. A wonderful 3rd anniversary in the books! Mexican food is always a good idea; I LOVE beer-battered fish tacos. A romantic (and delicious!) night out!

    1. It was a great spot for a special occasion! Beer-battered fish tacos are so good, especially when they do it right and they’re perfectly crispy 🙂

    1. We usually save room for dessert, I always say it goes to the heart and not the stomach 🙂

  5. How has it been three years since your wedding? I swear you and Jon were just saying your “I do’s”. I think I would’ve agreed with your compliments/concerns about this restaurant had I sampled the same menu items. The chips and guac look great. The tacos as well (but too expensive). The enchiladas; way too much sauce. And as much as Jon’s entree probably tasted great, I’m more about traditional Mexican dishes like tacos and burritos. Whether or not you go back, I’m sure you already have several great Mexican restaurants to choose from in NYC (and at more reasonable prices!) Happy Anniversary!

  6. Happy Anniversary to you both 🙂 There’s something truly special about celebrating a momentous occasion at a nice restaurant as it brings a touch of indulgence into your life, gets you out of the kitchen, and encourages you to try things you wouldn’t ordinarily cook. Thanks for sharing, and have a wonderful day 🙂 Aiva xx
