Hi friends, welcome back to the finale of my Nantucket series! Our final full day on the island came way too quickly. I suppose that’s the sign of a great vacation. Jon and I didn’t have any big plans other than our usual coffee, sandwich, shopping, strolling, and dinner at Nautilus. We woke up to a bit of a drizzle, but the day cleared up by the time we got our coffee and had breakfast.

Our favorite thing to do in Nantucket is walk along the beautiful streets. It’s the total opposite experience of going for a walk in NYC. I love admiring the stunning homes, perfectly manicured lawns, and blooming hydrangeas. On this walk we meandered up Cliff Road which has some very nice real estate.

Jon and I had to make a quick stop at Brant Point Lighthouse, this is the lighthouse you see coming in from the ferry.

A few snaps from homes that caught my eye around town. Sadly the décor shop I loved closed so we couldn’t find any good souvenirs besides some hats and a golf shirt from Vineyard Vines.

Jon and I saved best meal of the trip for last and enjoyed our dinner at Nautilus.

I sure miss our pre-ice cream sunset strolls.

One final ice cream from the Juice Bar.

The following morning we grabbed one last coffee, went for a quick walk, packed up, and headed to the pier for our 10am ferry. Don’t let these smiles fool you, we were sad to leave! After disembarking the ferry we walked to our car and started the unexpectedly long drive home. We called Sally’s Apizza and placed our to-go order for 2:45pm. When we arrived we had a bit of a wait because they burned the pizza before us and the takeout window guy was M.I.A. When we finally got our pizza it was not the one we ordered, so they had to remake it which felt like an eternity, but we ended up with two pizzas for the price of one. I actually thought the pizza tasted better once it had cooled and we reheated it. I don’t think I would wait hours in line to eat here, but it was delicious. New Haven pizza is famous for their thin-crust coal fired pizza and you’re supposed to get half tomato sauce and half mozzarella tomato sauce. I preferred the slices with the mozzarella.

We left New Haven by 3:45pm and encountered so much traffic on the way home plus an accident that was about two miles ahead of us. When we finally got to NYC the Brooklyn Bridge was shut down so the FDR was a nightmare from the traffic backups. From New Haven to our parking garage it’s about 80 miles and usually 2 hours, but it took us 3.5 with all the traffic. Spirits were not great. As soon as we got home I looked out the window and the FDR was totally clear, it was just an unlucky day! I think we finally got home around 8pm so it took us about 10.5 hours door to door. We learned our lesson to take the earliest ferry and not come back on a Friday. Despite the rough commute, we had the best time in Nantucket and are already dreaming of going back!
These seaside communities know how to provide a comfy relaxing experience for residents and visitors alike. Such a beautiful place Lyssy and every home seems to have a widow’s walk on top. Great place to catch the se views without having to join the common rabble, I expect. Too bad about the mess on your drive home. Talk about getting jolted out of your relaxing vacation. Have a great Wednesday. Allan
They really do! Our hotel had a widow’s walk but we forgot to go up there and check out the view. The island has a big whaling history so the women could see the ships coming in. At least we had a lot of extra pizza in case we got hangry on the ride home.
So many beautiful photos, Lyssy. I am in awe of the owners’ meticulous landscaped yards and I just love how the cute island comes alive with colour and charm and how there seems to be a neverending amount of roses that climb all of the shingled cottages – it’s a sight to behold once they begin to bloom, creating the most picturesque summer scene. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx
Thank you, it is such a beautiful island! Don’t want to know how much their landscaping bills are… The roses and hydrangeas are so pretty when they are in bloom, they really do bring the island to life with their beautiful colors.
🥰🥰🥰
Look at all those lovely hydrangeas everywhere! They really are extra abundant and colorful this year. Those are some really lovely houses…
It would be nice if they had a parade of homes so I could peek in some of the homes, they are so beautiful. No detail is left behind!
Isn’t it just the worst when a wonderful trip is ruined by the drive back home? That happened to us recently too, though not quite as badly it sounds like. But it’s so frustrating. That drive sounds like a nightmare. Also, I’m sorry, but can you really call it pizza when it’s just crust and tomato sauce? But anyway, sounds like a very relaxing final day in Nantucket!
Erases all of the relaxation! Jon did suggest we take the early ferry to avoid traffic, but I couldn’t imagine leaving at 7am. Guess I’ll have to next time haha. Haha you better not say that in New Haven! But I am not a huge sauce lover so I agree.
I’m such a fan of the style of houses in Nantucket and the Cape Cod area. And those blue and purple hydrangeas outside of them are gorgeous. It’s too bad about the heavy traffic on the way back home. Sounds awful!
I love the look of those houses too! The landscapers do a really nice job making all the flowers and hedges everywhere look so pretty without a leaf or branch out of place. We figured traffic wouldn’t be great, but we were in for a rude awakening.
Despite the long wait for pizza and horrendous traffic coming back, I’d say your last day in Nantucket was still a good one! You saw some gorgeous homes (with stunning gardens!) and incredible food at Nautilus: out of curiosity, what are the dishes you had? A great summer away from NYC, and I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer!
It was worth the rough time coming home! We wondered why we even left the island haha. We had fried oyster tacos, dan dan noodles, and some kind of crab fried rice. It was a delicious meal!
I’m like you, I dream of coming back to Nantucket; it’s nice to leave the turmoil of the world behind for a few days before going back to it.
It really is! It’s such a little slice of paradise and extremely hard to get on the ferry to head back home.
After such a relaxing walk on your last day to be stuck in traffic for hours is so unpleasant. But you got an extra pizza! 🙂 Maggie
Oh, candy cotton clouds – I don’t get to see those nearly often enough. A wonderful and relaxing last day with an awful journey back home, that is really annoying. Sounds like they were having a bad day at Sally’s Apizza, one mistake after another. Can I ask, does New Heaven Pizza taste much better than it looks? I’m thinking it must be delicious, but the presentation isn’t great. Your dinner at Nautils looks amazing on the other hand.
Lovely flowers in front of the houses. Unfortunately during peak tourist season traffic to the Cape is a bear. Sometime I would like to go off season for 3-4 days.
This is now on my must visit list
